Shadow puppet theatre is an established part of traditional culture throughout Southeast and Southern Asia. One example is the Indonesian Wayang Kulit recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Nugroho’s work in recent years has served as a device for creating a “mythical effect” that will enable the reinterpretation and revitalization of this form of theatre. By intertwining the contemporary history of Indonesia with his own personal history while adhering to the format of a myth, he turns the Wayang Kulit into multi-layered stories. His treatment of a story that originally contained the dual elements of light and darkness energizes it with layers of color, shape and sound. It is not a rejection of the rigors of an old culture, but rather reinventing the Wayang Kulit by recognizing the contemporary significance of the play and giving it a real multiplicity of elements.
