Wang Jian Wei has produced a diverse range of work from conceptual art and installations to video, theatre and opera. Much of his work critically questions the relationships that have arisen between people due to modernization including the extinction and continuity of spaces that are public and those that are private, or the effects of language and power. Although his video work adopts a documentary format that attempts to convey a sense of reality, its dramatic production and language are unique. In his work Hostage, he depicts, without using words, the reality of workers who support the urban change that has occurred in Chinese society in recent years.
