  • CREAM Forum Session 3 - Understanding Hybrid Media : The Visual Arts in the Age of Generative Software

  • Date: November 1 (Sun.) 14:00 - 16:00

  • Panelists: Lev Manovich (University of California -San Diego), Akihiro Kubota (Tama Art University), Keisuke Kitano (Ritsumeikan University)

  • Navigator: Junji Hori (Kansai University)

  • Outline: Eight years have passed since the publication of The Language of New Media by Lev Manovich which provoked research in related fields; since then the environment surrounding the creation of visual arts has undergone further change. Above all, different media technologies once separated are now integrated into a seamless software environment, which resulted in the creation of "hybrid" visual arts. Considering the exponential increase in processing speed, and the efficiency of video and music distribution software, it is no exaggeration to say that the infrastructure for visual arts creation is quite different from even the 1990s.
From media into post-media, peculiarities of media into generative software and static data into variable algorithms... Focusing on these shifts, this session aims to provide different insights into the contemporary visual art scene and the bold prospect of its future.
