This session will focus on the development of visual anthropology concerning the idea of 'being real' and 'seeming genuine'. The theme of exploration will be on human images, specifically faces, portraits and eyes.

  • Outline: From anime to robot, Japan has its own culture of visual anthropomorphism and personification. This session looks into two phenomena, "human likeness" and "looking original" from the perspectives of visual anthropology and art. Starting from the documentary film on "double" and picking up the dolls made of new media technology and the analysis of eyes, we pursue the mystery of "human likeness".
